Recommended Specification for Laptops

The following is a list of the recommended minimum specifications for a laptop to run smoothly in the StAC environment:

Item

Details

Notes

CPU Processor

Intel Core Duo Mobile Processor or similar

The processor speed should initially be as high as affordable as this can not be upgraded later.

Hard Drive

At least 80GB Hard Disc Drive

Memory

Minimum 2GB

Optical Drive

Optional

Wireless

Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n

We currently use 802.11n.which also supports a, b and g. n provides the highest speed for connection.

Battery

3 hour battery life

Long battery life is critical. 3 hours is considered to be the bare minimum with many machines now offering 4 and 6 cell options

Operating System

Windows XP  Windows 7

Vista has a relatively small base. Our current workstations are either XP or Win7

Note: If you are considering purchasing an Apple MacBook, then your experience will not be as seamless as windows based machines. You will still be able to access resources on the intranet, but may not be able to log on to the network and intranet with full functionality.

Other Considerations

-          Audio visual - applications will require microphone and headphone jacks

-          Weight – students will be carrying the laptops throughout the day and so a lightweight laptop is ideal. Try and have a laptop less than 2.5kg.

-          Ruggedness – Ensure the laptop is rugged enough to handle daily wear and tear in a school environment.

-          Hard Drive Protection – hard drive failure is a very common fault. Hard drive protection technology helps prevent damage and loss of data.

-          Screen Size – trying to do spreadsheets and documents on small screens can be hard work. Ensure a screen that provides adequate workspace – ideal size is 13” or larger.
